IHEA’s online courses have been a successful source of high-level education for those who prefer a virtual learning experience. The Fundamentals of Industrial Process Heating will run from October 26 through December 13. This extensive six-week course provides a basic understanding of process heating, and an engineering background is recommended to take this course. The curriculum includes the basics of heat transfer, fuels and combustion, energy use, furnace design, refractories, automatic control, and atmospheres as applied to industrial process heating. Weekly coursework, quizzes, and a final exam project are administered to guide students on their progress and evaluate their knowledge of the material.

Moderator interaction is available during the weekly forum discussions and via email for questions and to review the coursework. Dan Curry serves as moderator for the course. Curry, now retired, has experience in product development and management in industrial burners, burner control systems, temperature controls, and combustion systems. Throughout his career, he has served on various technical committees for ISO TC244, NFPA 86, NFPA 87, CSA B149.3, and IHEA’s Safety Standards & Code Committee.

Registration fee includes the online course materials sent electronically; a printed version can also be purchased separately. Students successfully completing the course will receive a certificate of completion noting 18 PDHs. The course fee is $775 for IHEA members, $950 for non-members. A group discount is available: Register two or more people from the same company at the same time to receive discounted registration. The first person will receive the regular rate, and each additional attendee will receive a $125 discount.

Two IHEA Seminars, One Industry Gathering

The Industrial Heating Equipment Association (IHEA) will present its Combustion Seminar and Safety Standards & Codes Seminar November 17-18 at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Charlotte, North Carolina. These concurrent educational programs will be led by subject matter experts from IHEA member companies with extensive experience in combustion technology and active involvement in NFPA 86 technical committees and working groups.

Attendees of both seminars will have the opportunity to participate in a combined Tabletop Exhibition and Networking Reception on Tuesday evening, providing a valuable forum for industry professionals to connect, exchange ideas, and discuss current challenges and advancements in thermal processing.

IHEA’s Safety Standards & Codes Seminar will offer a comprehensive review of NFPA 86, including key updates in the newly revised NFPA 86 Standard for Ovens and Furnaces, 2027 Edition. Designed for professionals involved in the design, operation, maintenance, and safety management of industrial thermal processing equipment, the program will address critical safety requirements and best practices across a broad range of applications.

Seminar sessions will focus on the application of nationally recognized standards governing the compliant design, operation, and safeguarding of industrial ovens and furnaces. Presenters serve on NFPA technical committees and play an active role in the standard’s development process, providing attendees with current insights into code requirements, emerging industry trends, and forthcoming changes that may affect operations and compliance efforts. Attendees receive a printed copy of the NFPA 86 Standard for Ovens and Furnaces, 2027 Edition as part of their registration.

The two-day seminar provides a comprehensive review of NFPA 86, highlighting requirements for:

  • Class A, B, & C Furnaces.
  • PLC Based Burner Management Systems.
  • Safety Shutoff Valves.
