During the 29th IFHTSE World Congress in Cleveland, Ohio, Prof. Tadashi Furuhara of Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, received the IFHTSE Medal from IFHTSE President Massimo Pellizzari.

The citation reads: “For his life-time achievement in the physical metallurgy of diffusional and displacive phase transformations in steels and titanium alloys and advanced microstructure characterization with electron microscopy techniques.”

Furuhara was born in Japan in 1960. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the department of Metal Science and Technology at Kyoto University and his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in the U.S. From 1989 to 2005, he was employed at Kyoto University. Since 2005, he has been a professor at the Institute of Materials Research (IMR) at Tohoku University in Sendai. During his career, Prof. Furuhara has served as director of IMR; he is currently director of both The Iron Steel Institute of Japan and The Japan Society for Heat Treatment. Furthermore, he is editor of Acta Materialia and Scripta Materialia.

The IFHTSE Medal is awarded from time to time for internationally recognized distinguished achievements in heat treatment and surface engineering. These may equally be seminal scientific findings or innovative breakthroughs in the industry that are widely published and cited.

The Tom Bell Young Author Award was given to Ellen K. Troyansky, right, of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Massachusetts.

Ellen K. Troyansky receives Tom Bell Young Author Award

During the IFHTSE World Congress 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio, the Tom Bell Young Author Award was given to Ellen K. Troyansky of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Massachusetts, for her talk, “Sub-zero Treatment of 17-4PH Stainless Steel Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF).” Here she is with IFHTSE President Massimo Pellizzari.

This award is given for the best paper from a young author presented at the IFHTSE World Congress.. The award covers economy class transport, accommodation, and the participation fee. The award is named in honor of the late Prof. Tom Bell of the University of Birmingham, twice IFHTSE President, IFHTSE Fellow, and IFHTSE Medalist.

Rob Goldstein gives webinar

Rob Goldstein, FASM, Fluxtrol Executive Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development, gave an ASM Heat Treating Society webinar December 9 on “Maximizing Small Diameter Inductive Tube Welding System Performance.” This webinar discussed the application of soft magnetic composite (SMC) material as a replacement for traditional ferrites used in tube welding as an impeder. The application of SMC was shown to providing substantial energy savings and increased productivity.

Goldstein is currently conducting research in computer simulation of electromagnetic and thermal physics, methods for magnetic
flux control, development of new induction thermal processing technologies, optimization of current induction thermal processing
applications, and development of early-phase induction systems for biomedical applications.

Conference Updates

Third International Conference on Quenching and Distortion Engineering
May 6-8, 2025  I  Vancouver, Canada

The Third International Conference on Quenching and Distortion Engineering will be in conjunction with AeroMat 2025, May 5-8. This is a continuation of the successful Distortion Engineering conference series, and the Quenching and Distortion conference series. The first QDE was held in Chicago in 2012 and has occurred at approximately five year intervals. There is a strong focus on the effects of residual stress during manufacturing, and methods to control distortion and residual stress.

Beyond the enlightening sessions and informative presentations, attendees can connect with peers during breaks, receptions, and special networking events. Moreover, the co-located exhibit hall, featuring cutting-edge technologies and products from AeroMat, ITSC, and AeroTech, provides an ideal setting for fostering new relationships and exploring potential collaborations.

QDE will be co-located with AeroMat 2025, AeroTech 2025 and the International Thermal Spray Conference and Exposition (ITSC) 2025. The conference hotel is the Fairmont Waterfront.

Motion in Heat Treatment — Heat Treatment in Motion & European Conference on Heat Treatment 2025 (ECHT 25)
June 4-6, 2025  I  Prague, Czech Republic

The ECHT 2025 Conference and the 5th International Conference on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering in Automotive and Transportation Applications will be in the Kaiserstein Palace in Prague, June 4-6, 2025. The European Conference on Heat Treatment (ECHT) is organized by heat treatment associations in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, and Switzerland. They are dedicated to the knowledge transfer between research and practice and the exchange of experience among engineers and scientists.

This conference is the fifth in the series. While the previous focus of the event was primarily on automotive applications, the focus has been widened to all transport applications including automotive, rail, and aircraft and marine applications of heat-treated and surface-engineered components. The event is combined with the European Conference on Heat Treatment.

The Aichelin Young Speakers Award will be given at this conference for the best talk by a speaker younger than 35 on an issue of high scientific or commercial relevance with implication for the industrial practice. The award includes 1,500 euros.

The Burgdorf Poster Award: The best poster will be awarded and announced during the conference and in the reports. Posters are valued as much as oral presentations. They give the chance to present results, graphs, and pictures in a non-transient form and discuss them with participants during the dedicated poster session.

30th IFHTSE World Congress
August 19-22, 2025  I  Suzhou, China

The 30th IFHTSE World Congress sponsored by the Chinese Heat Treatment Society (CHTS), follows the 25th World Congress held in Xi’an that was in 2018. More details are forthcoming as available.

The event will be at the Suzhou Shishan International Conference Center, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China.

The long-history friendship between CHTS and the IFHTSE has already led to successful cooperation on several significant events, such as the 3rd international congress on heat treatment of materials in Shanghai in 1983, the 14th IFHTSE congress (Shanghai, 2004, the 20th IFHTSE congress (Beijing, 2012), the 25th IFHTSE congress (Xi’an, 2018), and the 2nd International Conferences on Energy and the Future of Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (Beijing, 2014).

This world congress will focus on the organization of a congress that will deal with tradition and innovation in heat treatment and surface engineering. The 30th IFHTSE world congress will be a good opportunity for the delegates from a wide range of industrial and academic backgrounds to discuss and disseminate the recent progress, innovations, and developments in the field of heat treatment and surface engineering.
