It is with regret that we announce the passing of IFHTSE Fellow Prof. Tatsuo Inoue. He was 83. He was a professor at Kyoto University from 1983 to 2003. He made significant and lasting contributions to the theory of heat treatment simulation.

Inoue’s theories have been applied to manufacturing processes such as oil hardening, carburizing, and induction hardening. The results have been used to optimize component design and improve fatigue life. He extended the application of his theory to simulation of casting and welding taking into account phase transformation between solid and liquid. He applied molecular dynamics to the coupled metallo-thermo-mechanical fields for improving the theory and understanding of transformation-incorporated phenomena.

The applied software of Inoue’s theory was presented at ASM International’s 1st International Conference on Quenching and the Control of Distortion in 1992 where its advanced nature was recognized. He was elected as a Fellow of ASM International in 2000. In addition, IFHTSE honored Inoue with the Fellowship in 2006. The citation for this award read: “In recognition of globally acknowledged leadership in the development of mathematical modeling principles and practices and their application to the benefit and advancement of heat treatment and surface engineering science and technology.”

Inoue was active in various national and international academic societies. He provided many important and widely cited contributions at IFHTSE conferences, ASM International Conferences, and other materials societies. Inoue helped to organize the 6th International Conference of Mechanical Behavior of Materials in Kyoto, (ICM-6) in 1991 as the secretary general. He then served as president of ICM until 1995.

Niki Nouri is congratulated on her Tom Bell Young Author Award from IFHTSE President Masahiro Okumiya and Vice President (now President) and head of the jury Massimo Pellizzari.

Niki Nouri wins Tom Bell Young Author Award

Niki Nouri from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany was this year’s winner of the “Tom Bell Young Author Award.” She received the award for the paper: “Tailored Hardness Profiles Through a Combination of Specialized PBF-LB Processing Strategies with Subsequent Heat Treatment for Graded High-strength Components Made of Maraging Steel.” This award provides transportation, lodging and conference admittance to the IFHTSE Congress in Cleveland, Ohio, September 30 to October 3, 2024.

The “IFHTSE Congress Scholarship” went to Daniel David from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria and Benjamin Dollhofer from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. They received free admission to the next IFHTSE Congress.

Conference Updates

4th Mediterranean Conference on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (MCHTSE 2024)  |  April 17-19, 2024

This Conference will be held together with the 5th International Conference on Thermal Process Modeling and Simulation (5th ICTPMS) in Lecce, Italy.

The two conferences aim at providing a forum within which engineers, scientists, researchers, and production managers can review and discuss fundamentals, new challenges, recent progress, and emerging topics in the fields of advanced heat treatment and surface engineering technology.

TPMS-5 aims at covering all aspects of modeling and simulation of thermal processes.

European Conference on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering 2024 (and and A3TS 50th Congress)  |  June 5-7, 2024

The ECHT 2024 Conference and the 50th Annual A3TS Congress will take place together in Toulouse, France. The focus will be on processes and technologies for a sustainable future in transport and industry. The conference will deal with all fields of heat treatment and surface engineering: heat treatment of metals (iron and steel, non-ferrous alloys); thermochemical treatment of metals;  coatings and surface treatments; coatings and surface treatments including dry treatment operations (PVD, CVD, plasma, thermal spraying, etc.); and wet-treatment operations (electrochemistry, etc.). Specific sessions will be devoted to the aerospace industry. Additional focus areas include:

  • Contribution of innovative heat and thermochemical treatments to EU climate goals.
  • Digital technologies in heat treatment and surface engineering industries.
  • Coatings made from enhanced materials for electrical and thermal conductivity.
  • Surface engineering to address environmental constraints.
  • New needs in tribological properties: An open challenge for heat treatment and surface engineering.
